Is "Left-handed is Genius" True?

Writer's picture: Nao NakasatoNao Nakasato

Hi everyone! It's been a while since my last post here:(

Have you heard about "left-handed is genius"?

I am personally very curious because I used to be left-handed when I was little, but my grandma changed me to right-handed (as she thought it would be more helpful for me in the future), and I ended up being ambidextrous. I do not think I am genius or I have exceptional creativity, but I actually see a number of artists, celebrities, scientists, and businessmen, and who are left-handed. For example, Aristotle, Einstein, Edison, Darwin, Mozart, Leonardo da Vinci, Picasso, Bill Gates, and former U.S. President Obama were all left-handed. However, the worldwide proportion of around 90% of people preferring to use the right hand for many tasks, and only 10% the left hand, which is very minor. And people have various impressions of left-handed people like "they are smart, dexterous, and creative". So today I'll be exploring this topic!

They use different part of brain

First of all, as a premise, if the dominant hand is different, the way you use your brain will change. As I will explain in detail later, the left-handed mainly develops the right brain and the right-handed develop the left brain. And the role is different between the right brain and the left brain. It means that even if you experience the same thing in the same way in your daily life, right-handed and left-handed people feel differently. If the input method is different, the content of the output will naturally change. Therefore, it is natural that the idea is different from the majority of people.

The left-handed brain is well-balanced!

In addition, various studies have revealed that the left-handed brain has "less left and right difference" compared to right-handed. This means that the left-handed brain is very balanced.

From the time they were born, minority left-handed people have been given the task of "acting in the same way as right-handed people." Even though you can't use your right hand well, you have to use right-handed tools, and there are many situations where you think, "How can it work?". You have to use your brain to become a "genius" to live comfortably. In terms of the percentage, 1 in 10 people use such a brain. The biggest reason why it is said that "there are many geniuses in left-handed people" could be that they are not included in the frame of 9 out of 10 people and use their own brains.

Left-handed are prone to "feeling of discomfort"

Since they have a different personality from many people, there are many people who have a "feeling of discomfort" compared to those around them. Today's society is made up of right-handed specifications. Most left-handers experience physical inconveniences, such as tools such as scissors and soup balls that are difficult to use. And your way of thinking and actions may also feel uncomfortable that "something is different." This is the same reason why it is said that "there are many geniuses", because due to the difference in the way of using the brain, it seems a little unique from the surroundings, and the strengths and weaknesses are different. Then, let's take a specific look at what kind of brain differences there are depending on the dominant hand.

Same cells in the right and left brain play different roles

The human brain is also symmetrical like eyes, ears, and hands and feet. In addition, both the right brain and the left brain have brain cells with the same function. In fact, the 8 brain systems "thinking system", "emotional system", "transmission system", "motor system", "audible system", "visual system", "understanding system" and "memory system" are almost evenly straddled between the left and right brains. But in fact, our brain divides roles between the "right brain" and the "left brain".

For example, even in the same emotional system, the left brain creates its own emotions and intentions, and the right brain works to read the emotions of people other than yourself. In addition, the visual system of the left brain reads letters and sentences, and the right brain processes pictures, photos, videos, etc.

As a result of various studies, it has also been revealed that the left brain is mainly involved in the processing of language information, and that the right brain is responsible for the recognition of non-verbal images and spaces. In this way, the right brain and the left brain are responsible for different functions, but there is also a brain system that works the same symmetrically, which is the "motor system".

Right-handed people have developed the motor system of the left brain, and left-handed people have developed that of the right brain. Because the command from the right brain moves the muscles of the left half of the body, and the left brain controls the movement of the right half of the body. On the other hand, people stimulate the right brain by using the left hand and the left brain by moving the right hand. In other words, if you use your left hand often, your right brain will be activated, and if you move your right hand mainly, your left brain will develop.

8 systems in the brain - fundamental mechanism

Here, I am explain the basic mechanism of the brain. There are more than 100 billion nerve cells in the brain, but cells with similar functions gather together to create a "system". There are approximately

120 in the entire brain, and it is divided into 60 each of the right brain and the left brain. In other words, there are at least 120 differences in the work of the brain.

The following classification is organized to make it easier for the general public to understand, and divided the brain number into 8 major lines by function.

1. Thinking system = involved in thinking and judging something

2. Emotional system = related to feeling sensibility, sociality, emotions and creating emotions. The sensory brain number, which is located in multiple parts of the brain and is in contact behind the motor system, activates emotions through the skin senses.

3. Transmission system = related to talking and communicating

4. Motor system = It is related to moving the body in general, such as limbs and mouth. The brain number, which controls the movement of the hands, feet, mouth, and eyes, is divided separately in the motor system. The limbs are dominated by the opposite side of the brain, while the movement of the mouth and face is dominated by both sides, which controls the movement of both sides from one side of the brain.

5. Auditory system = involved in incorporating words heard by the ears and auditory information of sound into the brain

6. Visual system = involved in incorporating visual information into the brain, such as images seen with the eyes and sentences read

7. Comprehension system = related to understanding and interpreting various information, words, and things that come from the eyes and ears

8. Memory system = related to remembering and remembering

Linguistic and non-verbal systems - the specialty of the right and left brains

The right brain and the left brain have different roles, but what is important for left-handers is that the right brain is in charge of the non-verbal system and "the left brain is the language system" at a high rate.

According to a study, about 96% of right-handed people are processing the language system in the left brain, while about 73% of left-handed people are processing the language system in the left brain, and 85% of amphiesally people are processing the language system in the left brain.

Whether left-handed or right-handed, more than 70% of people are doing language processing with their left brain. In other words, when a right-handed writes letters with the right hand, it uses a network in the left brain because it uses a network in the left brain while using the motor system of the left brain. On the other hand, many left-handed people are doing language processing with the left brain while moving their left hand with the right brain compared to right-handed people. If you don't use both the left brain and right brain networks at the same time, you won't be able to spell sentences.

In other words, left-handers use both brains, so they tend to use words to put together their thoughts. Unlike right-handed people who are always stimulating the left brain, which is good at language processing, with their right hand, left-handed people mainly work on the right brain, which handles non-verbal information. The brain route used to replace it with words and say what you want to say is a little detour. In addition, you may talk before connecting the image and words you want to say, so you may hear it off from the surroundings.

Modern people mainly communicate using words, so it can be said that it leads to the discomfort that left-handed people have in their daily lives. Maybe some left-handed people have an inferiority complex if they can't speak well. However, the right brain has specialties of the right brain, which are for example memory, imagination, and inspiration. Those are associated with the fire senses and control emotions. That's why left-handed people are often said to be more intuitive than others.

So I am not quite sure if my grandma's attempt to change my dominant hand to make my life easier what successful or not, although I appreciate her effort... lol.

That's all for today.

I hope you enjoyed the story, and pls check out other posts as well!

See you soon:)
